Joshua Tree Awarded $1.1 Million Grant for Bike Lanes

Joshua Tree, CA – The County of San Bernardino Department of Public Works was recently awarded $1.118 million in active transportation grant funds through the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, Senate Bill 1 (SB 1).  The County applied for grant funds to widen Sunburst Street to install Class II bike lanes from the terminus of the existing Class I bike path near State Highway 62 north approximately 1.5 miles to the new Joshua Tree Elementary School at Calle Los Amigos in Joshua Tree.

The project was recommended for funding by the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) Regional Council and approved for funding by the California Transportation Commission (CTC) as part of the Augmented 2017 Active Transportation Program (ATP).

When completed, the new bike lanes will provide active transportation connectivity between State Highway 62, the Joshua Tree Community Center, Sunburst Park, and the new Joshua Tree Elementary School. In addition, the Sunburst Street bicycle facilities will provide bike and ride connectivity to other Joshua Tree destinations through the Morongo Basin Transit Authority.

The project is anticipated to begin the design phase in fiscal year 2018-19 and complete construction in fiscal year 2019-20. The grant provides 100 percent of the funding to complete this $1.118 million project.

“When this network of bike lanes are completed it will allow the community and visitors to get to their destinations safely and efficiently”, said Third District Supervisor James Ramos. “Getting more people out of their cars not only helps to keep Joshua Tree pristine but furthers the mission of the Countywide Vision’s Vision2BActive campaign, which aims to improve the health and wellness of all our residents.”
